After a long and tiring day at work I couldn’t wait for the day to be over, the only thing keeping me going was supper with my father to cheer me up. My god did it do the trick, we ventured to Kiru- a new Japanese restaurant on Chelsea green. It was sleek and modern, but not cold. The staff were friendly and charming, and the cocktails were really delicious; we had the black book and the pear amour. First up was the aubergine with sweet miso which melted in the mouth, leaving a tangy sweetness that made me want the dish all over again.
Then came seabass sashimi with smoked aubergine and a yuzu foam which was definitely the dish of the evening. I LOVE yuzu and the dish was just bursting with fresh, zingy aromatic deliciousness- many foams are tasteless and pointless but this was a foam with serious substance. Then salmon tataki, also very good but not a star; the same can be said for the tuna sashimi salad. The beef tataki however was truly yummy, with an abundance of shallot ponzu which was sharp and sweet and perfect. Then the sushi and nigiri- expertly made and exactly how it should be.
The main courses were black cod with miso, which was cooked to perfection and tasty but I wouldn’t re order it. The pork belly, cooked for 12 hours with spicy apple salsa however, was exceptional. Finally the last savoury dish was the fried poussin with truffle which was crispy and succulent with a hint of truffle and a great end to the main courses.
Dessert was an olive oil and orange cake with black sesame ice cream and chocolate sauce- so well balanced and just the right amount of sweetness, the orange cake so light and fragrant made the dish outstanding.
All in all one of the best Japanese meals I have had, better than Noma by a mile. Go now before it gets famous and you can’t get in for months!
